Can Your Kicker Win Your Fantasy Week?
He always goes in one of the last rounds of the draft and is seemingly unimportant to the success of your fantasy football team. He is an afterthought not even considered a real football player by many football fans and even some of their very own coaches in the NFL. I am of course talking about the kicker. Many overlook this position when scouting for their fantasy football draft. But, they shouldn’t. It could make or break a game or two for you during the course of the season.
I can remember one game last season where I was down by 4 points going into the Monday Night Football game. I had one player left to play and my opponent had zero. My player left was the kicker. I sweated it out and the team my kicker was on failed to score touchdowns so I could points off of the extra points that my kicker would convert. He finally kicked a long field goal and an extra point in the last quarter to get 5 points for the game. His accuracy helped win me the week. I ended up making the playoffs by one game in my divisions standings so that game ended up being very important to the final outcome of my season.
So, I’m not saying you should start drafting kickers in the third round or anything. The kicker is still not as important as a running back or wide receiver to the course of your fantasy football season. But, you should do a little scouting when it comes to what kicker you should draft for your fantasy team. Mock GMs should look at some things like what offense does the kicker play on. An offense that scores a lot of touchdowns can be advantageous because your kicker will get one point every time they kick the point after attempt. It’s easy points every week. Then, after that, go for kickers that have a lot of power that can kick long field goals because you more points for long field goals over 40 or 50 yards than the normal 25 or 30 yard field goals they may kick.Take a look here to learn more: Fantasy Football 2011 Positional Rankings: Kickers
